The Technology
A nylon envelope that contains the hot air is heated using propane burners to a temperature greater than the atmospheric temperature. This difference in temperature allows the balloon to lift off the ground, just as warm smoke rises from a fire.
Wicker (similar to cane) has been proven to be the most appropriate material for balloon gondolas because it is strong, durable and flexible.
Steel cables are woven within the wicker to provide the strength to carry the passengers and equipment.
